TV Reception Problems We Fix
A bad picture does not always mean you need a new roof aerial. These are the faults our fitters see most often, and what usually sorts them out.
| What you notice | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Every TV lost signal at once | A failed masthead amplifier or its power supply, or a fault at the aerial | Test and replace the amplifier or power unit before looking at the aerial |
| Picture breaks up when it rains | Water getting into a cable joint or the aerial connection box | Replace the damaged section of cable and seal the connections |
| Picture drops out on and off | A rusty aerial, a loose connector or cable damaged by the weather | Repair the connection, or replace the aerial if corrosion has set in |
| Some channels missing, others fine | Aerial slightly out of alignment, or an older aerial that no longer suits the frequencies in use | Realign the aerial, or fit a suitable wideband aerial |
| Only one room has a problem | The wall socket, splitter or cable run to that room | Trace and repair the faulty part, leaving the main aerial alone |
| Problems started after strong wind | The aerial has moved, or a bracket or lashing has worked loose | Resecure and realign it, or replace it if it is bent or unsafe |
Please do not climb onto the roof yourself. A photo taken safely from the ground and sent by WhatsApp often helps us tell you what is wrong before we arrive.
Three Quick Checks Before You Call
These take a couple of minutes and can all be done safely indoors.
- Try another TV. If the other televisions in the house are fine, the fault is probably that TV, its lead or its socket rather than the aerial.
- Check the aerial lead at both ends. Make sure it is pushed firmly into the wall and the TV, and swap it for a spare lead if you have one.
- Look for a booster power unit. If your system has one, it is often behind a TV, in a cupboard or in the loft. Check it is plugged in and its light is on.
Engineering work at your local transmitter can also affect reception for a whole area. The Freeview updates and alerts page shows current disruption. Still no picture? Call us and we will get an engineer out.

★★★★★Following a loss of signal for 2 tv's
Following a loss of signal for 2 tv's, I thought I had an aerial problem. Steve Furber from Mike Harris Aerials attended, and quickly diagnosed the problem as not being the aerial, but the masthead amp & power unit. He had a spare on his van, and the work was completed within 30 minutes. What really excellent service, thank you.
★★★★★Aerial repair
When Ross arrived on site after introducing himself he asked what was the problem with the existing installation. I told him we intermittently lost the picture on our television. He very quickly established that it was probably caused be the existing aerial being very rusty. He then replaced the old aerial and tidied up the cabling from the television to the aerial. He then checked it was working correctly. After another couple of days he called me to make sure it was still working correctly ( clearly someone who cares about the job they do )
★★★★★Aerial/cable issue resolved
I was able to get an appointment at short notice and the company did an excellent job at arranging times around my schedule. The team I spoke with were polite and helpful. Most importantly the engineer who attended was polite, on time, friendly and professional and quickly located and resolved the problem.
★★★★★Work well done very pleased

TV Aerial Fitter FAQs
What do TV aerial fitters do?+
TV aerial fitters install, repair and realign aerials and the equipment connected to them. That includes testing the signal, and checking cables, wall sockets, splitters and amplifiers to find where a fault is, then explaining whether you need a repair, an adjustment or a new aerial.
Can you fix poor Freeview reception without a new aerial?+
Often, yes. Many reception faults come from a cable, a connector, a socket or a failed amplifier rather than the aerial itself. Our engineers test the system first so you only replace what is actually faulty.
How do I know if I need a new TV aerial?+
A new aerial is usually the answer if the old one is rusty, bent, storm damaged, loose on its fixings, or no longer suits the frequencies used in your area. The engineer will show you the test results and explain the options before recommending a replacement.
How much does a TV aerial fitter cost?+
It depends on the fault, access to the aerial, the cable route and any parts needed. A cable or connector repair usually costs less than a new aerial or a multi-room system. You get a free, no obligation quote before any work starts.
Do you offer same-day TV aerial appointments?+
Same-day visits are often available, depending on your area, the job and engineer availability. Calling early in the day gives you the best chance of a same-day appointment.
Why does only one TV in my house have a bad picture?+
If the other TVs are fine, the aerial is probably working. The fault is more likely to be the wall socket, the lead, a splitter or the cable run to that room, and an engineer can trace exactly where the signal drops.
Do you charge a call out fee?+
There is no call out charge for quoted work. You are given the price before the job starts, so you can decide whether to go ahead.
Do you install satellite dishes and Freesat as well?+
Yes. We are approved Freesat installers and also fit, align and repair satellite dishes for Sky and other services. See our satellite installation page for details.
Can you wall mount my TV at the same visit?+
Yes, just mention it when you book. The engineer can mount the TV, run the aerial lead to its new position and tidy the cables in one visit. See our TV wall mounting page for more.
Do you work for landlords and businesses?+
Yes. We regularly help landlords, letting agents, blocks of flats and commercial premises. Tell us how many rooms or units are affected when you get in touch.
Which areas do you cover?+
We cover towns and cities across Scotland, England and Wales. See our areas we serve page, or send us your postcode and we will confirm local availability.
